NYSSLS / NGSS: Next Generation Science Standards

New York State is implementing the New York State science Learning Standards, which is an extension of the Next Generation Science Standards. I love the 3 dimensions and how they interweave to help students explore science and construct their own knowledge; giving them ownership over their learning.  One resource that has really helped me navigate this is the Paul Anderson website The Wonder of Science. 

I fell in love with the AMTA philosophy of one long storyline; The Historical Chemistry Timeline. I tried to stay as true to the AMTA materials as I could while still weaving some current chemistry phenomena in and hitting all NY standards. Each "unit" has its own theme... something we are questioning, that scientists also questioned in their time.
